One of Italy’s most beautiful hamlets, Frosolone was riding the high of electing a new mayor! As such, the city was in a frenzy and the newly elected first citizen offered his fellow Frosolonesi a meal – on the house. It consisted of porchetta and sausage panini, grilled veal, a side of potatoes and all the wine and beer you could drink. Suffice it to say, the whole city turned up.
Unfortunately for them though, my camera didn’t. Wanting to enjoy the atmosphere and jubilation of electing a new official, we chose to live the moment rather than capture it.
Perched atop a gently sloping hillside and surrounded by wheat fields and pastures, this hamlet is a sight to see.
In the heart of the historical centre of Frosolone, we came across this little house/museum that brought us back in time to the olden days of farming, cheesemaking and preserving food. It puts on display a variety of antique tools used for farming, to make cheese, pasta, cure meats, and make preserves. It’s owned and operated by a local – Enzo Cavone, or more commonly, by his nom de plume, Cupiccio – at no charge.
Cupiccio made us feel like we were entering his home. We were just extra members of the family. The two tables and chairs are set up so that everyone sits together and everything is shared. You could see that he has a real passion for this mostly lost art and he wants to share this love with anyone willing to listen.
Everything he offers is either made by him or supplied by local farmers and producers who still use (mostly) traditional methods to produce it.
Frosolone is lovely.
